In Memoriam - “Big” Joe Lombardi
For 45 years, “Big” Joe Lombardi was the unmistakable Voice of the Bulldawgs. His booming voice, enthusiasm, and love for Copperas Cove High School athletics made him a beloved part of the Bulldawg tradition and a familiar voice to generations of Copperas Cove families.
On March 9, 2023, Joe signed off from this world for the final time. While his voice may no longer be heard from the broadcast booth, his legacy continues to be an important part of Copperas Cove athletics.
Joe’s love for Copperas Cove and for the Bulldogs was unparalleled. For four and a half decades, he brought professionalism, energy, and genuine enthusiasm to every game he called. His dedication to CCHS athletics helped make him much more than a broadcaster. He became part of the fabric of the community.
Honoring a Legend
Before Joe's passing, the broadcast booth at Bulldawg Stadium was officially named the “Big Joe Lombardi Booth.” Today, every time a broadcast team steps into that booth, they are reminded of the standard Joe set and the passion he brought to every game.
His legacy extends beyond the stadium as well.
On May 29, 2024, the Copperas Cove community gathered for an unveiling ceremony officially renaming a portion of Sunny Avenue, the street leading to Bulldawg Stadium, as Joe Lombardi Way.
It is a fitting tribute to a man whose voice helped tell the story of Copperas Cove athletics for 45 years.
Still the Voice of the Bulldawgs
If you listen closely on game night, you can still hear Joe.
Whenever the Dawgs score a touchdown, Joe Lombardi’s trademark call, “Bulldawg Touchdown!!!” continues to play over the airwaves.
It is more than a familiar sound. It is a reminder of a man who devoted 45 years to the teams, athletes, coaches, and community he loved.
And, of course, there is another way to celebrate the legend: grabbing a Lombardi Touchdown Meal Deal at the Quarterback Club concession stand.
From the broadcast booth to Joe Lombardi Way, his name remains woven into the traditions of Copperas Cove athletics.
The Voice may be gone, but the legacy of “Big” Joe Lombardi lives on.
