COPPERAS COVE – A Bulldawg has finally cemented herself in the national high school volleyball record books.
Kyra Gaston, a 2022 graduate of Copperas Cove High School, was recently awarded her place in the girls volleyball record books with the National Federation of State High School Associations, or NFHS. This comes after her outstanding play landed her an opportunity to play at Lane College in Jackson, Tenn., for four years.
Gaston finished her Lady Dawg careers with 277 blocks during her senior season in 2021. That mark takes the top spot for blocks in a season in Texas and the 11th-highest mark nationally.
Throughout her varsity career, which began her sophomore season, Gaston tallied 553 blocks. That mark registers as the second highest in Texas and the 20th nationally.
“Kyra was very driven and a hard worker,” said Christina Thompson, an assistant volleyball coach during Gaston’s high school career who is now head coach of Lady Dawg Volleyball. “She wanted to be coached. If she missed a block, she wanted to know what to do so she could get it the next time. Because of this, she set an elite standard for blocking in Copperas Cove.”
As a senior, Gaston earned All-State honors from the Texas Sportswriters Association after she helped guide the Lady Dawgs to the playoffs yet again.
Gaston also starred in track in the blue & gold, advancing to the Area meet as a senior.
“I’m excited for Kyra to finally received this well-deserved recognition,” Thompson said. “Not only will it celebrate her hard work throughout her volleyball career, but it will give our future student-athletes a target for excellence that will only enhance her legacy.”
